2 Peter 1:3-9
One of the biggest questions people of any age ask: what is my purpose? It isn’t up to us to decide our purpose, find our purpose, or even achieve our purpose. In Christ alone, we have the power to live a life that is glorifying and honoring to Him! The Holy Spirit gives us love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control! We often put pastors, leaders, successful business owners, celebrities and athletes as idols. Unknowingly, we begin to let doubt, insecurities, discontentment and misplaced priorities into our hearts. This world is full of distractions; look anywhere but at Jesus.
Growing in our personal walks with Jesus and growing as a church is not based on what we do, how we do it, when we do it, where we do it or even who does it; it’s a lot simpler than we make it out to be! The power to change hearts doesn’t come from our ability to share the Gospel. We can only plant the seed, but God grows it. Jesus saves people, not us. Jesus grows the church, not us. Jesus rescues broken marriages, not us. Jesus puts it in people’s heart to come to church, not us. We are strengthened and used by Him, but it is His power that lives within us!
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.”
2 Peter 1:5-7
We are called to be more like Jesus. Can you imagine if all of us who call ourselves Christians were like Jesus? It’d be a beautiful world. But the author of 2 Peter said “make every effort…” meaning; we’ll never be as perfect as Jesus. But we must do just that, put in effort to be more like Jesus. If you’re sitting here discouraged reading that passage above because you know that you struggle with one of those, remember that it is the power of God that gives you purpose! Call upon Him and He will help you in those areas. He can do anything!
