Real Power

Romans 1:16, 15:13
The title of this devotion, “Real Power”, had me browsing the internet to research what the most powerful thing on earth is. The funny thing is, from Google’s perspective, the most powerful thing in the world depends on how one measures power. So, let’s look at a few different categories. From a scientific standpoint, the strong nuclear force is the strongest force in nature and black holes are a close second. The two most powerful entities shaping the globe are the world’s leading superpowers; The United States and China. The human mind and the power of an idea are often considered the most influential in shaping human history. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t include love. Yes, love. Love is frequently cited as the most powerful driving force. It is the underlying motivation for human connection, sacrifice, and the drive to protect others, often overriding instincts for self-preservation.

Power. Now let’s talk real power. The Apostle Paul declares in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” This powerful verse reveals that the gospel is not merely information about Jesus Christ; it is the very power of God at work. Through the message of Christ’s death and resurrection, lives are transformed, sins are forgiven, and people are brought into a relationship with God. The gospel has the power to break chains of fear, guilt, addiction, and hopelessness because it points us to the saving grace of Jesus. There are six Greek words translated “power.” This one is dunamis. It’s a word where we get our English word dynamite. Big and explosive power. The gospel proclaims and produces salvation in everyone who believes it.

In Romans 15:13, Paul continues this theme of divine power by praying, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Wow. What an incredible prayer! Here we see that God not only saves us through the gospel but also empowers us to live with hope. This hope is not based on circumstances but on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit working within us. When we place our trust in God, He fills our hearts with joy, peace, and confidence in His promises.

These truths have practical application for us today. First, we should boldly share the gospel, knowing it carries God's power to change lives. Second, we must continually place our trust in God rather than in our circumstances. When challenges arise, we can remember that the same God who saves us also sustains us. Finally, we should seek the Holy Spirit daily through prayer, worship, and the study of God's Word, allowing Him to fill us with hope and strength.

As believers, we are called to live confidently in the power of the gospel and to overflow with hope, becoming a testimony of God's transforming grace to the world around us.

Our life, our future, is built on the POWER of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
