Do Not Lower the Bar

We are all guilty at some point or another, we all have gotten caught up with lowering the bar. May it be settling for an outcome, rather than waiting for the right outcome. I remember when Sarah and I were in the midst of our house searching days during the high interest rate. I found myself finding something about every house we walked into that made it “The” house. Sarah would walk with me through the houses and remind me to not lower the bar on what we are needing/wanting. After about 10 hours we walked into the house that we both had peace in.

In today's scripture reading we see a powerful moment when Jesus does something that many at the time would think should have been done to him. He gets to the floor and washes his disciples' feet! The Savior of the world on his knees washing his followers! Jesus gives us the example that we are to serve one another as he served us. We see in the following verses, John 13:14-17:

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

No matter if you have been a follower of Jesus for 2 days or 20 years, let this be a reminder that we should not lower the bar to our commitment to the Lord. Let us be open and willing to serve the Lord and love one another as Christ loves and served. Jumping back to the story of Sarah and I’s house searching day, let us be honest with ourselves that we are not lowering the bar. Just like with our Christian walk, let us all remain humble and willing to love as Jesus loved, let us not settle in thinking this not worthy of our time. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, what are you willing to do?
