Wow, Mary used a perfume that costs a year’s wage! She really pulled out all the stops because of who Jesus is. Nowadays we don’t use perfume to honor those who deserve honor, but think through this, if Jesus were to come into town, what would you do if you were pulling out all the stops? Me? I would get 50-yard line tickets for the Detroit Lions, and then take him to a great restaurant like Texas de Brazil in Detroit. Now I know that wouldn’t be a year's wage, but row 1 at the 50-yard line would cost around $2500 per ticket!! Now the years wage isn’t the main point, but it is the honor that was placed on Jesus by using that perfume or buying a 50-yard line ticket. It is the idea of wanting to offer Jesus your best no matter what the cost is to you.
For years that was the idea behind dressing up for church. For some it may have been a source of pride, but for many it was the idea that you were trying to show up in your best to honor Jesus. It is about the heart of what you're trying to do. So, we need to ask ourselves, when we give to God, are we giving out of our best or out of our reserves? When you serve are you just trying to get it over with, or are you putting in the time and energy that you would do at a job or a hobby that you're passionate about? When you give money to the church, is it thought out and prayed over, or do you grab the few dollars left over in your wallet after the week? We as Believers need to count the cost of being a disciple of Jesus, and ask ourselves if we are willing to give Jesus the best in our life.
