Bold Expectation

2 Kings 2:11-15
We witness here one of the most dramatic transitions in Scripture. As Elijah and Elisha are walking together, a chariot of fire and horses of fire suddenly separate them, and Elijah is taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. In an instant, Elisha’s mentor, spiritual father, and protector is gone.

Faced with this sudden loss, Elisha does not sink into despair or shrink back in fear. Instead, he steps into his calling with audacious expectation. Before Elijah departed, Elisha had boldly requested a double portion of his spirit. Now, the time has come to see if that bold expectation will manifest in reality.

Elisha picks up Elijah’s cloak, which had fallen from him, and walks back to the bank of the Jordan River. He stands before the water, strikes it with the cloak, and asks a definitive question: “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?”

This question was not asked in doubt, but in bold expectation. Elisha was holding God to His promises. He refused to believe that the power, miracles, and presence of God had departed with Elijah. He expected the same God who did wonders through his mentor to do wonders through him. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, instantly recognized the shift, saying, “The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.”

Many of us live with timid expectations. We look at our resources, our past failures, or the absence of human help, and we settle for a safe, comfortable faith. But Elisha teaches us that God honors holy boldness. When we inherit spiritual mantles, face daunting obstacles, or stand before our own symbolic Jordan Rivers, we are called to act with high expectancy.

Bold expectation means picking up the mantle of faith and stepping up to the water. It means trusting that the God of yesterday is fully active today. When you expect great things from God, you will see His power part the waters in your life, paving a way forward where there seemed to be no way.
