Foundation Matters: Part 2

Matthew 7:24-27
I sing a song to my 9-month-old all the time about this passage. “A wise man built his house upon the rock, and the rains came tumbling down. The rains came down and the floods came up, but the house on the rock stood firm.”

When it comes to us as individual believers, our foundation must be built on Jesus Christ. Because when the storms of life come passing through, we won’t be shaken or swayed. When a financial crisis hits, we don’t crumble. When something shakes our marriage, we don’t break. When our kids sin against us or go down a path that breaks our heart, we aren’t completely devastated. When we go through the trials of life, we are comforted by Jesus and remember His Sovereignty. Now, all those things are hard to go through! But when our life is built on the foundation of Jesus, we are able to withstand the storms because we know that He is in control! We know and trust that He has already won the battle! Our hope is in Him alone.

So, if we as individuals have a strong foundation of Jesus, we must remember the same goes for the church. Not the building, our brothers and sisters in Christ. When we all come together as one body, we must stand united on that firm foundation; Jesus Christ. When conflicts arise in the church; whether it be over what we think should/shouldn’t be worn, how to budget, what the stage looks like, you name it - we can all remember our foundation is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our conflicts should not cause division!

The text not only says that the wise man builds his house on the rock, but it actually compares it to a foolish man who builds his house on the sand. You have probably heard the story; when the rain and storms came, the house on the sand came crumbling down. The foundation, everything built upon it, brick by brick, was being held up by nothing. Just believing in Jesus or just coming to church, is like building a house upon the sand. We must actively pursue Jesus, follow Him and give ourselves fully to Him in salvation! When we study God’s true word, we are standing on a firm foundation. When conflicts come our way, we know how to stand for what is right and not be swayed by the ways of this world.
Take a minute to reflect. When hard things happen, are you quick to be discouraged and shaken? This doesn’t mean you aren’t a child of God, but maybe your foundation has cracks in it. Take a moment to pray and ask God to help you strengthen your foundation! If you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, call upon Him today.
