Colossians 2:6-7
A few weeks ago, our staff went up to Lake Ann Camp for a team-building retreat. One of the team building exercises involved working in pairs and walking through the rigid forest. Sounds easy, right? Well, one person from each pair had to take turns closing their eyes and being led by their partner. An exercise to show us how we have to trust our team, or, taking a step further, trust God when we can’t see what's ahead. We were instructed to watch out and be careful of tree roots. Walking for ten minutes straight without seeing was extremely nerve-racking! I had to use my sense of touch with my shoes to make sure I wasn’t approaching a tree root or big rocks I could trip over. I had to rely on my partner, Mackenzie Cornett, to keep me on the right path! Once it was Mackenzie's turn, I started playing a Christian song called “Roots” by Unspoken just to be funny. The chorus says:
I've got roots, I've got roots
And I'm standing on the truth
And it's you, That I'm holding on to
And deep down in the ground
Firmly planted, safe and sound
And I can't be moved
In you, I've got roots
We definitely had lots of tree roots in the winding woods, but all joking aside, we ultimately need to be rooted in Jesus Christ! Our verse today in Colossians reminds us of that. We are to CONTINUE to be rooted, built up, strengthened, and overflowing with thankfulness. Anyone who starts out a race always starts out strong; it’s towards the end that they start to get weary and tired. The same goes for our walk with the Lord. When we first turn to Christ in salvation, we are eager to know the savior and share him with everyone around us! As the years go on, our spark fizzles out, or perhaps vanishes completely. We grow weary and become apathetic to the things of God. We lose our fire for gospel impact and spiritual growth. If this sounds foreign to you, consider it a warning of what can easily happen if we aren’t careful! Paul instructed us to live just as when we had received Christ. Babes in Christ are often the most excited to jump in and help in a ministry, study the Bible, and share the good news. It’s new and fresh to them! We ought to be the same, never losing our spiritual fervor. Remembering DAILY what we once were without Christ, and having that thankfulness Paul talked about. I think far too often we become complacent, and we need to recognize that and do something about it! Pray and ask God to excite you again about what He’s done in your life. Ask Him for opportunities to be used for gospel impact. Ask Him to ignite in you what once was. Let us continue to live out our lives rooted in HIM. Roots are deep, firmly planted, and can’t be moved. Can that be said of you and your faith?
