The weight of sin—far heavier than anyone should carry for any length of time. Yet, so many of us chose to bottle it up, accept the shame and guilt, and try to forget it happened. However, our body knows—it can cause us to be stressed and filled with anxiety, it can cause us to fall into depression and despair, it can cause us to become erratically angry. Sin literally, chemically, changes us. Which is why, when we finally come to the end of ourselves in repentance and confession, the burden of the sin “rolls away.” It is like the clouds lifted, and suddenly we can begin again. That is the beauty of what Christ did on the cross, died for our sins, and once we confess him as Lord of our lives, we begin as a new creation.
From the moment of salvation, you and I are washed clean. The stain of sin that once covered us as we walked in darkness, has been washed pure as white as we now walk in the light. No sin. No shame. No guilt. No fear. None of that. We have become the children of God, an heir to the throne, positional right with God. Our rank, is higher than that of angels. No one, not Satan or any of his demons, no sin or anything alike, can separate us from this position. We are his, forever and ever.
Now, that means, that while we are here on earth, we are travelers, on our journey to heaven. We may be an heir to the kingdom to come, but we are still living in a fallen world. We see, we feel, we are affected by the heaviness of sin in this world—our sin, the world’s sins, all of it. We can’t escape it, until we reach home. However, because we are positioned to succeed, being that we are in Christ, we have everything we need to help us get through the chaos of this world. We have God’s Word, that guides us in truth and gives us the armor we need to fight the battles we face. We have the opportunity to pray and talk with God, that humbles us into submission of his will and his good for us. We have the gift of community with other believers, that helps us in our dark days, cheers us on in our good days, holds us accountable and challenges us when we need a dose of reality on all the other days. Those tools, are given to us, on day one of salvation! Immediately as we become a new creation, God positions us to succeed in this life, and that hope and encouragement as we utilize those tools, helps us on our journey homeward bound.
So, fellow traveler, if you are feeling down, hopeless, burdened, reach out to a brother or sister in Christ. Lay it all down at the feet of Jesus in prayer. Dust off that Bible, and start putting that into practice. Remember, nothing can separate you for God, because you are his, and he will help, guide, and sustain you until you meet him face to face.
