David is one of my favorite people to read about in the Bible. A man of God who did almost everything the right way. All the way up to being king! However, as we learned from the sermon this week, every choice we make has a cost with it. David let his walls of protection down and fell into deep sin. Once David committed the sin with Bathsheba, he instantly tried to cover it up. Something we all know doesn't work! We see in 2 Samuel 12 Nathan gives the example of a rich man and a poor man who purchased lambs. When a traveler came along to the rich man, rather than using one of his own, he decided to take and use the poor man lambs.
“David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan,” As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this must die! He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.” 2 Samuel 12:5-6
Hmmmm, kind of sounds familiar, doesn’t it?! David took advantage of another man's wife, then brought him home from war to try and cover it up. When all else failed he sends him back to the battle to be killed. David needed a wake-up call! He needed to be called out for what he had done. God used Nathan as that wake-up call. In verse 7 we see Nathan's response to David’s anger by saying “you are the man!” I often hear people say they are afraid of accountability. I always ask why? As brothers and sisters in Christ we are called to encourage each other, as well as hold each other accountable. Accountability is not a bad thing, sometimes we need a friend to come along side us and give us a much-needed wake-up call. My challenge for you today is take time and pray that God may call out an area in your life that may need a wake-up call. We all have things we battle, let's not run from accountability, let’s run to it!
