We have all had a moment where things didn't go the way that we had planned. Maybe it was a friendship that fell apart, or a job you didn't get. No matter what it was we walked away upset and confused. As I was graduating from college, I had made up my mind that I would be working in sports, but when that door continued to close, I became more and more upset and confused, but why? Was I upset that God had the path for me to do what he called me to do figured out already or was it that I was putting my own understanding before God. For others maybe you lost a dear friend, spouse, or family member and you just don't know why? That loss raises a lot of questions, but it also brings confusion and sadness. As we read in Luke 24 today, we see Cleopas and another going through that grief of losing someone.
As they walked to the village of Emmaus, they were not aware of who was walking with them. They began talking with an individual and telling them why they were looking so upset. They shared about what had happened in Jerusalem. The Bible tells us in verse 21 “we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem, Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. " Cleopas and his friend were depending on their own understanding and not relying on what the prophets spoke about. At that moment they invited Jesus (at this time they did not know it was him) to stay and eat with them as the night was getting late. When they broke bread together, Jesus revealed himself to them for a short period of time. The Bible says they got up at once and returned to Jerusalem sharing with the eleven what they had just seen.
I love that throughout the Bible we can see examples of the very things we go through today. When we miss out on something we are looking forward to or losing someone close to us. We tend to lean on our own flesh and understanding which leads us to be upset and confused. Let this be a reminder that God’s plan is perfect. When we are experiencing these moments, take time to pray for wisdom and peace. I am thankful that we serve a God that knows what we need. Let's not try and take things into our own hands but always trust in his!
