Joshua 1:1-5 "After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you."
This is a time that could have been seen as very difficult for Joshua. Moses, the leader of the Israelites, God's guy, had died. Joshua was one of Moses's closest and trusted men. He served as Moses's assistant. Moses was now dead and the Israelites needed someone to lead. God then goes to Joshua and tells him to get himself and the people ready to move. They were going to be taken to the land that God had promised them. In a way, this had to be exciting, but scary for Joshua to step up and lead.
We get to see an awesome characteristic of God in this passage. Verse 5 says, "No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you." What an incredible truth to cling to! God promises Joshua that he has no reason to be afraid. God will take care of their enemies, and he also promises that he will never leave or forsake them. This had to have encouraged Joshua and given him and the Israelites strength.
Just as God has shown through many stories throughout scripture, he will also never leave us nor forsake us. We can hold firm to the truth that God is always with us. No matter how alone we may feel, God is there with us. No matter how hard the struggle is, God is there. God has the full ability to carry us through every single thing, we just have to see him there. Too often, we feel alone and far from God because we turn our backs on him. We choose to be filled with the distractions of this world rather than to be filled with his presence. God, however, never leaves us or forsakes us. Do you ever feel alone or distant from God? How does this passage change your perspective on life?
God is always there for us. Through every struggle, trial, or storm. We can always turn to him to get us through anything. He is for us. He is our sustainer. Let us cling to him in all things. Let us hold dear to the truth that he is always with us and will never leave us! The God of the whole universe is with us!
