Every night before I put my kids down, we spend a few minutes reading the Bible as a family. My kids have the "Jesus Storybook Bible" and they love reading it together. This Bible helps simplify the stories for young children while also having pictures drawn to go along with each story in the Bible. One of my favorite things about this specific Bible is that it makes sure throughout every story it points to Jesus. Every story is not just told as another story, but it shows how every story points to God and his perfect plan. God has a perfect plan in which he sent Jesus to show the ultimate act of love for his people. I love watching my almost 5-year-old really start to catch on that every story is connected and points to the Gospel. After every reading time, we spend a short moment unpacking the passage and she is now seeing the story of God's love throughout it all. Her starting to understand that Jesus is God and why he died on the cross has been an awesome time for us as parents!
John 10:30-33 "’I and the Father are one.” Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, ‘I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?’ ‘We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.’”
In John 10, we see Jesus explain to the Jews that he and the Father are one. Jesus is showing that he is God! It is such a profound truth for us to know and understand. Jesus is fully God and fully man. He was not created by God, but he is God. He came down from Heaven to be born as his creation, knowing that he would have to sacrifice himself to save us from our sin.
The Jews were always infuriated with Jesus, especially when he claimed to be God. Even though Jesus had shown many signs and miracles that could only have happened from the power of God, the Jews refused to see and believe. They would recognize that Jesus was performing great signs and wonders, but they would not recognize it as God's power. They thought that he was lying, creating tricks, or even demon-possessed. They could not accept the truth that Jesus was actually God. Many had completely missed who Jesus truly was. They chose to not believe that Jesus truly was God and that he was the Messiah. It is so sad that they refused to see the truth, and that God himself was right in front of their eyes! Instead, they revealed their true hearts' intent and chose to want to kill Jesus.
All of the Bible points us to know who God is, how he loves us, and how we can live for him. We must recognize who we are as sinners and that we need a Savior. We must also see that Jesus is that Savior and he is God. If Jesus truly is God, everything changes. We must take his Word as the ultimate truth, and abandon our own feelings. We must seek salvation in him alone and look to serve him as Lord of all.
