Romans 6:22-23
We are in the midst of the (hopefully) worst days of winter. When we have had enough of the cold temperatures and snow and are longing for the spring sunshine and warmer temperatures. We’ll soon say, “Well, I’m glad that winters over!” We try to forget the past and are excited to look towards the future. However, when it comes to our journey of faith, many get caught up with things from the past. They put limits on themselves, yet the future is so bright when we give our lives over to Jesus Christ. We find in Romans 6:22-23:
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Think about this for a moment; we have been set free from the chains of sin! This should be a celebration! Paul writes that we have become slaves to God and the benefit you reap leads to holiness and the promise of eternal life. So, if the chain of sin has been released, we need to let go of it as well and focus on the power of the Holy Spirit that is within us. Think about the amazing things God can do through us when we focus on the Gospel rather than the past. Now I understand this is easier said than done, however we must be willing to start making the shift. I want to challenge you with a couple of application steps to begin that shift.
1. Believe in your new Identity: We are children of God not who we use to be.
2. Actively spend time with God: We spend so much time on things of this world that fill our minds with so many negative thoughts. Replace them with things that bring you closer to God. Remember isolation/emptiness brings relapse.
3. Stay connected with fellow believers: We are called to not forsake the assembling of believers. When we meet together, we find encouragement from one another. You don't have to fight issues alone!
