Choosing Indulgence

Romans 1:28-32
Oxford dictionary defines the word Indulge as allowing oneself to enjoy the pleasure of ____________.

We all have something we tend to indulge in. Whether it be a Netflix series, social media or even food. For me, it's Dr. Pepper! For those of you reading this that think Dr. Pepper is the same as Mr. Pibb, you are sadly mistaken and should get right with the Lord. The point of the matter is that we tend to indulge in things that are of this world and can only bring temporary pleasure. We find Paul writing about the dangers of indulging in things that are not of the Lord. Paul writes:

“Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.”

Think about what Paul is warning the believers about. There were people who did not think it was worthwhile to practice or even keep the knowledge they had about God. Now you may be reading this thinking well they are just plain silly for that, but don’t be blinded about our own walks. We too can get lost in the trap of indulging and putting blinders on the things God is calling out in our own lives. I recently watched a study on Right Now Media by Kyle Idleman that talked about the average American picks up their cell phone 2,000 times a day!!! Yes, you read that right. Upon hearing that, I felt convicted. I hope you do as well. I surely do not pick up my Bible even close to 2,000 times a day. I find myself and many others talking about the latest social media trend or breaking news that we saw. How often are we talking about what we learned from God’s word lately with the same amount of passion? While it’s okay to have things that give you a break, we must be careful that we are not pushing our walk with the Lord aside for them. As you go about your day, I want to challenge you with a couple of questions.

What is something I took away from this past week Sermon?
What is something I learned from my own Bible time?
With those questions, I encourage you to find a friend or even a family member and share your answers with them. Let us indulge in the knowledge of God over the things of this world.
