The Gospel

Romans 10:9-10

Do you have any “go-to” verses that you use when you have an opportunity to share the gospel? Oftentimes, when preaching or sharing the gospel, I like to use a few verses in Romans that are often called the “Romans Road”. It is an easy path through a couple of verses that clearly articulate the gospel in a way that can be shared very quickly but effectively. Let’s take a look at each verse and break down the gospel in a way that is easily understood and easy to communicate.

Romans 3:23 “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

Romans 3:23 shows us that all of us have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. Sin, as a simple example, is anything bad that we do. It is anything that goes against God or His Word. It is important for us to realize that every single one of us has sinned and fallen short of God.

Romans 6:23 “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

So take what we know from Romans 3:23 and apply it forward to 6:23. We have all sinned, and that sin has a punishment. It is important for us to realize that we earn this punishment just like a wage with a job is earned. Sin earns death. Plain and simple. We all deserve to physically die because of sin. But it goes beyond that, it is talking more of a spiritual death, to be separated from God forever in a very real place called Hell. We must realize that our sin deserves this punishment; otherwise, we will not understand and realize the beauty of the second half of the verse. “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. We did nothing to earn or deserve eternal life with God. It is something that God has offered to us as a gift to be received, not earned. It is all by what Jesus has done by being sinless, God in the flesh, and willingly dying on the cross to take the punishment of out sin away.

Romans 5:8 “8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

In Romans 5:8, we see that even while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. It is nothing we did to earn or deserve this salvation. We do not need to turn our lives completely around before coming to Christ. It is He who has done all the work.

Romans 10:9 “9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

In Romans 10:9, we see what it takes in order to be saved. We must confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord. We must recognize Jesus for who He is. He is God. He was perfect, sinless, and did not deserve to die, yet He willingly laid down His own life for us to find salvation from sin. We must recognize that He is Lord of all things and confess that He is Lord of our lives. The other half of the verse tells us that we must also truly believe in what Jesus did. He died on the cross, and then 3 days later, He rose from the grave, conquering death and conquering sin, just like He said He would. This proved His power and divinity as well. If we do these things, we will be saved from the punishment of our sin and find eternal life in Christ.

The last verse is Romans 10:13, and it says, “13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Pretty straightforward but packed with the amazing truth and beauty of the gospel. Even though we turned our backs on God, He has given us a way back to Him through Jesus. All we have to do is truly believe and follow Him. That is the gospel. Do you know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior? Have you confessed Him as Lord? If not, you can do that today and find salvation!

Take time to reflect on the beauty of the gospel today and how God has saved you. Think about how you can share this good news with those around you so that others can come to know this good news as well!
