Oh, the tangled web we weave. My dad taught me at a young age to “never give Satan the foothold.” That implication was a warning to be careful of the choices you make, because “sin can take you further than you ever thought it would.” I look back and laugh at some of the conversations that I had with my dad as a young naive teenager, thinking I was invincible and not susceptible to “sin like that.” Boy, was I wrong. I did lots of things that I wish I could take back—my dad was right, I should have really listened to those words of wisdom. As an adult, I have had many conversations with my parents about the shenanigans I got myself into as a teenager—and it shocked me to my core when my parents told me that they knew exactly what I was doing. I thought I was getting away with the lies and deception, but little did I realize they knew all along—so if there are any teenagers reading this right now—YOUR PARENTS KNOW, and if they don’t, THEY WILL. No amount of covering up the decisions I was making, fooled them. How absolutely embarrassing to realize this as an adult, but how freeing it was to be truthful about the past with my parents.
If you have been keeping up with the sermon and devos for this week, you know exactly where I am going with this devo. David committed adultery, and now, like many of us do when we feel trapped in sin, has now decided to cover up his sin, accept David chooses murder—because apparently that’s a sane decision…I mean, we read this story, many of us have read it several times, and we may have heard many sermons on this subject, and we think how crazy David was to go to such extremes to cover up his sins, but we also think we would never be that insane. It is easy for us to think we are not susceptible to making David’s choices…but that is what Satan wants us to believe. We need to get real with ourselves, and realize that we are not smarter than Satan, and that we can be just as easily swayed into making life altering choices as David. We need to be ON GUARD. We need to realize that we can’t rely on our own strength. If we do none of those things, then just like David, we may find ourselves making “cover up” choices.
Sin will take us further than we ever thought it would. The choices we make everyday lead to all sorts of consequences…so are you relying on your own strength to make your life choices? Are you not being honest with yourself about sin in your own life, or even worse, now you find yourself in the tangled web of lies? It is time for each of us to be honest with ourselves, to stop covering up our issues, but address them. We need to look to God for the strength to confront those problems. I urge you all, be on guard! Let this be your wake-up call!
