Main Point and Overview:
There is hardly a story in God’s Word more terrifying than David’s drama with Bathsheba and Uriah. Someone the Bible describes as a “man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14) committed both adultery and murder. How is this possible? David got distracted from his mission. It’s terrifying because if it could happen to arguably the most passionate man of God in the Old Testament; it can happen to you and me! There have been many families over the years who have been strong for a season, only to be shipwrecked over time. Ultimately, temptation squeezed into one or more of the family members, and someone “gave in” to the fleeting pleasure of a moment. We cannot let this happen to our families! Every moment matters. Every moment has the potential to either strengthen or sabotage our families. For David as king of Israel, he should have been leading his army into battle instead of lingering back with “too much idle time on his hands!” If he had been leading, he would not have fallen to lust. If he had been leading, he would not have had sin to cover-up. Instead, making matters much worse, David cared more about his reputation than he did the testimony of God. In the end, he would pay a steep price as much of his family would follow in the same lust-craving ways resulting in dysfunction and even more death. The Bible faithfully and compassionately warns us that there is a process to disaster that we must avoid at all costs. What is often our biggest mistake is that we overrate our strength and underrate the power of temptation. When you ask the question – “how did we get to this place” – remember, one poor decision at a time. Don’t let what happened to David happen to you. Commit to “win the moment” for the protection of your family!
