Desperate to Serve

Wow! Such a powerful question in such a small portion of today's scripture reference. As we read through 2 Kings 2:1-9, I find it astonishing Elisha commitment to following Elijah. Each time Elijah had to go to a new place Elisha went with him. However, the catch was every time they got to the place they were traveling to, Elisha was met by the company of the prophet and was reminded that Elijah would be taken to heaven. Elisha response each time “Yes, I know, so be quiet.” When things don’t go our way, do we give up or continue on? Elisha knew he did not have forever with Elijah. He was learning from Elijah, but he was willing to go the distance. Elisha was desperate to serve, are we desperate to serve our Savior? Will we push through, even when he has us going to places we may not want to go?

I think back to when I was a little kid. I always wanted to be next to my dad. Whatever dad did, I wanted to do. I remember the first time going golfing with him. I knew that no matter where we went, I was going to be able to learn from him but also spend time with him. Memories that will last a lifetime, as we still golf together to this day. For my dad it easily could have been a lot less stressful if I had just stayed home when I was younger, but his selfless act of letting me tag along was a way of serving me. As I write this, and Paisley is “Chatty Cathy”, I am reminded that I too need to serve my family with a desperate spirit. To care and honor their time with me. As parents, our little ones (or maybe not so little anymore) are watching us. However, don't let it stop with just meeting their needs. As parents let's show our children the love of Christ by serving him. By remaining committed to him when life doesn't go the way we thought.

Just as Elijah was about to be called up to heaven, he looked at Elisha and asked him the above verse. So let us look at some questions—Am I desperate to serve Christ, no matter where he has me? Am I desperate to serve my spouse and children?
