“The sky is falling!” How well do you remember the fable of Chicken Little, a.k.a. Henny Penny or Chicken Licken? Let me jog your memory; In the story, an acorn falls on Chicken Little's head, and she takes it as a sign that the sky is falling, and the world is coming to an end. She spreads the news—“The sky is falling!” You can imagine the growing rumors, the conclusions, the overreacting, and the fears, all spreading like a raging wildfire. Sound familiar? Everywhere we turn right now; the tv, news outlets, mailbox, social media, phone calls, the watercooler at the workplace, neighbors, the check-out line, and now robotexts, you are probably witnessing that the crowd manipulation is ramped up! We hear, “if party ‘x’ wins the election, the sky is falling”, “if party’ y’ wins the election, the sky is falling”.
Friends, fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, it is time to stand. I’m not talking about standing on the blue, the red, the green or on “my rights”, I’m talking about standing on the firm foundation of the Word of God. We need to start with and stand on God’s Word as our ultimate authority. God's Word is a stable foundation for life because it never changes. Gods’ word is perfect and true. Stand firm on that! Stand. Here is the biblical meaning of stand; to be immovable, to be of steadfast mind, to resist or oppose, to not yield or comply or give way, to uphold authority, to remain firm.
Psalm 19:7-9 “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.”
Matthew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
The end of the Chicken Little fable ends like this, “And what happened to them after that I don’t know, but nobody ever saw them again; if the sky really fell, I never heard about it. They were only a pack of silly fowls, anyway.” Sounds a lot like our modern day doomsdayers or our media. There are a lot of fools spreading “sky is falling” fake news and there are a lot of fools falling prey to the fear mongering.
Isaiah 28:16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic."
We just finished a sermon series on Joshua and it’s there where we find some life changing wisdom; Joshua 1:7-9 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
God’s Word should be the authority that we look to in every area of our lives. It is a lamp to light our path, a source of unity with God’s heart, and a tool for making the foolish wise. It is a firm foundation. God is faithful to his people! God is faithful to himself! God is faithful to his Word!
?How firm a foundation, O saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
What more can he say than to you he has said
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?
