Decide While You Still Can

It has been said that your life is the culmination of the decisions you make. Think of the number of decisions you make every day. From the most routine: “What flavor of chips do I have with my sandwich,” to something with a bit more life impact, “Should I marry this person?” Then there is, of course, the single most important decision that surpasses all of life’s other decisions, “Do you proclaim Christ as Savior, or do you reject him?” Chapter 12 begins with the Passover just a few days away, and Jesus attending a dinner that was being given in his honor. The next day, Jesus arrives in Jerusalem riding on a donkey and being hailed as king, much to the concern of the chief priests. As Jesus interacts with the disciples, he begins to prepare them for his pending death. In verses 35 and 36 he speaks directly to this. He is cautioning and encouraging them to “believe in the light” while they still can. The first disciples and followers of Christ had seen and heard directly from Jesus. Jesus knew his death was coming soon and as such, the time to decide was near.

Each one of us that calls themselves a born-again Christian, can look back to a specific moment when we made THE decision. Mine was made on February 6th, 1987. In that moment of decision, I went from darkness to light. My eternity was forever changed from death to life. The Holy Spirit reaches out to every heart, beckoning the sinner to come home. But not everyone will decide to accept Christ’s gift of grace. Some will reject it outright. Some will put it off as they think “Oh, there is more time to decide later, I have a life to live.” But to not decide is to decide, and when the last breath leaves our body, the opportunity to decide is over. Faith in Christ means salvation for the soul. It is the single most important decision that all of us face, and all of us will make, one way or the other. “Choose you this day, whom you will serve.”
