I love my kids and seeing the way they think and process. They always see things from a different perspective and there are a lot of funny moments because of it. Right now, my 5-year-old daughter thinks she is smarter than her mother and me. She has said multiple times now that she thinks and knows she is smarter than us. She is actually a very smart kid, but I thought she was joking at first. I love her confidence in herself, but she will need to learn and understand reality. We must come with a humble approach in life, and it is something I hope to teach her as she grows.
In 1 Samuel 17, we see the incredible story of David versus Goliath. One of the most important things to realize from this story is that David put his full confidence in the Lord rather than himself. David was by no means physically able to defeat Goliath in a battle. You would never bet that he could ever win. The one thing that David had going for him, was that he found his confidence and faith in God alone. He knew and understood that God could and would bring him victory.
"David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”
Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
Throughout his story, David put his confidence in the Lord and not his own abilities or attributes. David by no means should have been able to defeat the lion, bear, or Goliath. He had no reason to put any confidence in his own abilities. Instead, he put all his faith and trust in the Lord. He knew and had confidence that the Lord would deliver him from his enemies. He knew that by God's power alone that he would defeat Goliath. David wanted everyone to know it as well. He wanted others to know that it is God's power alone.
In our own lives, we must put our confidence in the Lord alone. We must not look to our own abilities in our lives, but instead, place our confidence in the Lord. Through him, we can face the struggles and trials in our lives. God has the ability to carry and sustain us through anything that life may bring us. Let us put our full faith and confidence in him alone.
