Main Point and Overview:
Effective leadership is found in a process. Leaders are not born; leaders are made! For the young protégé of Moses, nothing could be truer. Adrenaline and emotion will only take a person so far. When the pressures of our culture mount, decisive leadership grounded in both grace and truth is always needed! For Joshua, this meant learning from his mistakes. It’s been accurately stated before that the greatest platform for transformational learning is through our mistakes. Joshua learned that God was bigger than his preconceived ideas. It’s also true that leadership rises to the top when a crisis comes. For Joshua, this was believing God even when the obstacles appeared insurmountable. He was willing to “go upstream against the current” of the majority. Why? How? He absolutely believed that God was bigger than the giants of the land. He absolutely believed that the hand of God would guide the people to defeat whatever challenge came their way. He absolutely believed that God always keeps his promises. That is why when the pushback came, he had the courage to stand firm on his principles. Leadership takes courage, and often, a person will not completely know what he’s “made of” until the crisis comes. When the moment came, Joshua stood on faith and not fear. He was developing into a great leader before he had the position of leader. When it came time for Moses to pass on his “leadership mantel,” it was Joshua who God choose to succeed him. Why? Because Joshua had become a principled man of courage. How are you developing as a courageous leader? When the “moment of truth” comes, will you be ready? As time goes by, new leaders for the church are needed! Will you be ready to answer the call for the Gospel’s sake?
