As you read John 10 today, we are met with a powerful statement in our first verse. Jesus again says, “I am” ...followed by... “the Good Shepherd.” He is stating once again he is God. The Good Shepherd is purposeful, he knows what must be done, and makes sure he sees it to the other side. It brings me a great sense of comfort that I have a Savior that knows me by name, and would lay down his life for me.
We often correlate sheep to not being that smart, however, when it comes to their shepherd, they will follow because their lives are at great risk. Shepherds would sleep in the gate opening to protect them, allowing them to act on any threat of danger quickly. Sheep know their shepherds' voice, and would put their lives in the hands of the shepherd. They trust that their shepherd would lead and protect them as far as their eyes could see. With Jesus proclaiming to be the Good Shepherd, we can rest assured that we have a shepherd we can put our trust in. The Good Shepherd will lead our lives with purpose! Jesus “laid down at the gate opening” for us when he took up the cross for our sins. He leads us still through the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to keep our heart and eyes fixed on him as we go about our lives.
My prayer for you is that you know the Good Shepherd, and that you put your trust in him. There will come a time where you don't know why you are in a bad spot or situation, but you can have peace and comfort knowing that the Good Shepherd is leading you through it. Always remember the Good Shepherd is always purposeful, knows what is best, and will carry you through.
