“This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
You are welcome, this song will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day— but that’s not a bad thing! Today’s Bible reading is talking about the light that comes from Jesus Christ. As Christians we all know that we live in a dark and sinful world. We also know we are called to be light. A light that shines into the darkness, proclaiming the Good News. As we study the book of Philippians during the Joyride sermon series, we find ourselves painting a picture of Paul encouraging the church to remain faithful and to find joy in everything around us. I love hearing testimonies of believers sharing their faith in the midst of a trial, almost every time they encounter someone who asks the million-dollar question. “How can you be this calm during this?” As believers we know the answer, it’s nothing we could do but only through Jesus Christ.
The next time you can sit in complete darkness, I encourage you to turn on your cell phone flashlight and notice how the room lights up. A single light can give you enough light to allow you to see where you are going. Just as that example in today's verse tells us, that God made his light shine in our hearts so that we then can have the light of knowledge of God’s glory in Jesus Christ. What a powerful truth! A light that has lifesaving powers into a sinner's dark heart. A light that should fuel us to want and share it with others! My question to you is what are you doing with the Light God put in your heart when times get tough? Are you putting something over it to keep you where you are, or are you letting it shine in the darkness and lead you through whatever you may be facing?
I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine,
I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
