Hardwiring My Desires

Psalm 37:4

“Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Man, when we look at this verse, it can be very enticing. “He will give you the desires of your heart”. What are some desires that you have? When I think of a list of desires, I often come back to the classic question, what would you do or what would you want if you won the lottery? Many of us already have a list in our minds, ready to go. Perhaps it is a specific house, car, pool, vacation, or clothes; the list can go on and on. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you actually did win the lottery? How much would it change or affect you? It is kind of terrifying to actually win that kind of money, and how does it not change you? It can be scary in a way to see what would happen to us if we were granted all of our desires.

The context of this passage is not that God is going to grant you your wish list like a genie in a bottle might. Instead, we need to look at the first half of the verse for context. “Take delight in the Lord”. Delight in the Lord, it is so important! To delight in Him means to take joy, satisfaction, and pleasure in Him and not just in what He gives. When we choose to do these things, an intimacy with God is cultivated. We find ourselves enjoying His presence and making Him our deepest desire. Our deepest Joy needs to be found in Him and rested in Him alone. It is a choice that we must make regardless of whatever situation we may be in life. Joy in Him is found in Him alone and can be found even when we have nothing else. God is always there. He is always good. He is always faithful.

When we choose to find joy in the Lord and delight in Him, He begins to change our hearts. We want Him and desire to be more and more like Jesus. We find ourselves wanting God to take over, and we surrender our own desires, exchanging them for His will. Our hearts' desires become His. We want to see His will and desires played out in our lives more than our own desires that we wanted before. Let us check our hearts and make sure that we are fully delighting in the Lord and trusting in Him rather than earthly things! In doing so, God will grant us the opportunity to be a part of what He is doing! May our hearts be aligned with His above all.
