Colossians 3:5; 1 John 5:21
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”
Colossians 3:5
How many times have you regretted not doing something sooner? Maybe it’s the dishes; you waited too long and now there’s no room in the sink and the food is all crusted. Maybe you waited too long to lovingly confront someone of their sin and now they’re in really deep trouble. Maybe you sinned against your partner and waited too long to confess; now your marriage is rocky. This ranges from small sins to big ones. Colossians 3:5 is a reminder to put our sin to death. Not later. Now. The verse continues to say that the wrath of God is coming because of the sins listed. It reminds us that we once walked in our sin, but when we became followers of Jesus, we must lay them at the feet of Jesus.
This verse was always fascinating to me on its own. Clearly, we know that we can’t be completely free from sin. We are incapable of being sinless; only Jesus could do that. So, you must pair this verse with some other verses. Take a moment and read Romans 6:11-12. We may not be able to completely rid ourselves of sin. Not in our own strength, anyway. We must rely on the Holy Spirit! We will never arrive, or be free from sin completely, until the day our physical bodies die and we get a new perfect one in Heaven! But until then, we must consistently keep ourselves in check. You may not think it is that serious, but it is. Yes, God is forgiving and loving. But He also disciplines us and has a righteous anger when we sin against Him. Not only that, but when we let sin or idols take over, we miss out on so many wonderful things that God has for our lives!
Take a few moments today to reflect on this idea. Do you have accountability for your sin? Do you have people in your life who will lovingly and in Truth call out your sin? Do you take time to repent, truly repent, over your sin? What steps are you taking to put those sins to death? If I can tell you anything, it is to seek Him first; in the ugly and the messy!
