When Your People Need Encouragement

Nehemiah 4:10-12

The people had become tired from building the wall, and their morale was going down. Imagine how tired you might be from spending every day working endlessly to rebuild this massive wall. As your body is really feeling the fatigue, you start to hear about how your enemies are plotting together to attack you. I would imagine that you would start to feel scared, defeated, intimidated, or wonder if what you are doing is even worth it. The people needed to change their perspective and have a mindset shift. They needed to be encouraged and to feel it. We see next that they continue to work on the wall, but that they also put others in place for protection in case of an enemy attack. They could feel safer while rebuilding again. I also love later in the chapter, in verse 14, where we see an encouraging statement.

“Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

Maybe you are feeling down and discouraged in your life. Maybe you are feeling defeated. Maybe you feel that the work you are doing is pointless. I encourage you to remember whoever the Lord is. That He is great and awesome! He will fight for us! He is there for us every step of the way in our lives. I think too often we fail to recognize this, and we choose to put our perspective on everything that is and can go wrong.

Living for the Lord can be a difficult thing. It goes against your own desires, and it goes against what the world tells us. We often get caught up in all the distractions, and we forget to look to the Lord and the truth that is found in Him. We start to get worried about what can go wrong rather than keeping our eyes fixed on Him. I don’t know exactly what you are going through in your life, but I encourage you to do it with Jesus and not on your own. Give everything to Him. Trust in Him fully. Do not worry, but cast your cares and anxieties to Him. Live for Him boldly and keep your eyes fixed on Him. Constantly remind yourself of who God is and how Jesus has saved you. Do not grow weary and do not lose heart.

Hebrews 12:1-3 “12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
