Pray Under Pressure

Nehemiah 4:1-5

The building of the wall was not easy for the builders. It was a physical burden, but one we saw they did together! This passage shows the mental anguish it must have been. We are given two names in this passage. Sanballat and Tobiah. The Jews are hard at work, rebuilding the walls, and these two men sit there and ridicule and do what they can to discourage them. The response to these ridicules is amazing! They could have responded in kind, ridiculing the men right back; they could have gotten discouraged, maybe even looked to see if there was any truth to the men’s words. They could have given up. Instead, they pray! They give the power over to God. They remind themselves that it is God who is in control. It is God whom they represent as the builders. It is God that these men are ultimately speaking out against! We are to give our cares, our troubles, our discouragement over to God! He is in control of everything, and one day He will return! All the things of this earth will be wiped away, and all of those who scorn Him and His children will experience the wrath that comes from not turning to God and deciding instead to mock him.
