The Spirit Factor

1 Corinthians 2:10-16
The other day, my wife couldn’t find her phone as she was rushing out the door to go to work. The frantic search started in the usual spots she’s in while getting ready and still couldn’t find it. This widened the search into the laundry room, her car, I went and checked the basement, checked the crevasses of the living room couch and love seat. Found a dog toy, ink pen, and a couple of M&M’s but no phone. Debbie wanted to leave without her phone but it’s a long drive and I like to be able to check on her. One more search of the house and we found it in the spare bedroom where she went and watered a plant. Searches like this happen in many of our homes; looking for keys, wallets, or the TV remote.

The believers in Corinth were in a culture that believed truth was relative to one’s situation. Truth was more of a perspective rather than a standard set by God. This sentiment is exactly what we are experiencing in our culture today. Everyone has their own set of truths. Someone may say “that is your truth, but my truth is different.” As if truth is a perspective that can be changed when the conditions change. David K. Lowery says this in his commentary on 1 Corinthians, “The blessings of salvation were prepared by the Father, carried out by the Son and applied by the Spirit.” This is one of the roles of the Holy Spirit, revealing truth and wisdom. The Holy Spirit illuminates God’s word so the believer has a deeper understanding of God’s truth. Verse 10: “These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit” (ESV).

This is a huge resource that God has provided for each believer. Look at the depth of that wisdom, “For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God” (ESV). All knowledge and wisdom are known by the Holy Spirit. This is an active search that knows every detail of our lives. Unbelievers don’t have access to this and are ignorant in the spiritual truths of God. We have a guide that illuminates truth, pricks our conscience, and produces spiritual fruit in our lives. Everyone may be searching for their truth, but the Spirit reveals the only truth that matters. I can tap into real spiritual truth through prayer, asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom, guidance, and to open my heart to receive God’s will for my life. Will you pray and rely on the Holy Spirit to lead you in difficult situations? Will you allow the Holy Spirit to change your heart when it comes to conflict? Will you look to the Holy Spirit when you are faced with an important decision? Rely on the Holy Spirit and watch how your faith will grow deeper and richer.
