John 4:28-30
This year there was an alternative Superbowl half time show. This was in response to “Bad Bunny” being named as the headliner. Bad Bunny is known for vulgar lyrics, promoting all kinds of debauchery, and espousing anti-American themes. This alternative show involved several country artists and Detroit’s own Kid Rock. There was a twist in the show that no one saw coming. Kid Rock opens with a song from the early 2000’s and that song is full of vulgarities and worldly views on life. What was interesting is that Kid Rock only played part of the song and then it faded to a hymn played by two classical musicians. As the hymn fades Kid Rock is reintroduced to the stage as Robert Richie (His real name). Robert then plays a stripped-down version of the country song “Til you can’t”. The twist comes as the song is supposed to end, Robert adds an additional verse. He states he woke up one Sunday morning with this song and new verse on his heart. He sang, “There’s a book somewhere in your house that could use some dusting off. There's a man who died for all our sins hanging on a cross. You can give your life to Jesus, He will give you a second chance til’ you can’t.” A powerful performance that caught me totally off guard. We see Kid Rock in the worldly pursuits and then the Hymn signifies the connection to God and Robert Richie is a new creation proclaiming Jesus to the world.
This is what Jesus does. He gives me a second chance, one full of love, peace, and purpose. Jesus had changed this woman at the well. She was a woman with a worldly reputation, who had lived a life that didn’t honor God. Station in life doesn’t matter to Jesus. Rich or poor, good or bad, rebellious or a conformist - Jesus wants a relationship with you. Jesus helped this woman see her need for salvation and restoration with God. The effects on this woman are profound. She goes back into the city, the same city that treats her as an outcast because of her reputation. She tells everyone about Jesus and what He had done for her. Her excitement at finding the Savior became contagious. Because of her excitement and passion, people wanted to meet Jesus and hear His message. In Jesus her reputation didn’t matter anymore, she was a child of God. Am I excited about my faith in Jesus? Do I tell others? Who have I gathered to hear about Jesus? I want to follow the woman at the well's example. I want to bring people to Jesus. Pray for specific opportunities to share your faith. Look for people and families that you can invite to church. “Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest,” said Jesus. Shall we gather the harvest?
