Nehemiah 2:1-20
Rebuilding. Have you ever been through a rebuilding project? Maybe your home’s foundation has experienced decades of water intrusion, leading to the decline of the structural integrity. And ouch; fire, wind, and hail can cause so much damage, creating a need to rebuild. Dwellings are not the only thing in need of rebuilding; families, marriages, relationships, teams, a life... those things can crumble as well, and most likely, we have all experienced “rebuilding” in one way or another.
Nehemiah tackled a rebuilding project with courage, prayer, and confidence. My rebuilding story is not one of a great city wall; it is nowhere near Nehemiah’s story, but a story of restoration, healing, and rebuilding from the rubble, and I did not always face my circumstances with courage, fear, and confidence. I recall that I had many fearful moments and too many times chose self-sufficiency over prayer, and as far as confidence goes, well that word was not a part of my vernacular.
I’ve learned through reading Nehemiah that he knew the importance of serving a king, and not just King Artaxerxes, but the King of Kings. Nehemiah knew God’s will because he knew God’s Word. Nehemiah didn’t just acknowledge God's existence; he was committed to love and serve him. The closer you and I read the bible with a heart to understand God, the more we will want to pray and ask God to do what he has already promised to do. Nehemiah trusted God, and this story is a sweet and needed reminder that with God's help, even seemingly insurmountable tasks can be accomplished. God’s work will succeed.
Nehemiah, a servant, had a high calling from God and invited others, other servants, to be a part of it. Friends, we don’t need a fancy title to do the work and will of God. Living a life fully devoted to God, serving humbly and obediently, being a servant of the Lord, is a beautiful position. Are you waiting for a calling from God or wondering what ministry to serve in or what wall to rebuild? Well, wait no longer, we see in Matthew 28 that we have been given a great calling; to go and make disciples, a call to continuous action of "going" into daily life and encountering people to share the Gospel.
