Approach is Everything

Matthew 7:1-2

Why is it so easy to judge others but not ourselves?

What do you think it means to judge someone in a Biblical context?

Judging others comes down to a very tricky balance. We are supposed to hold other believers accountable for their actions. However, we often do this with hearts of judgment instead of love. We easily point out the sin in others and ignore our own. We should not be looking to judge others with a harsh, critical, or condemning attitude. We quickly become hypocrites when doing so. Instead, we need to approach our brother or sister in Christ with love and care when pointing out sin. Wanting to point them in the right direction and calling them to repentance. We should be celebrating when they repent! Too often, though, the church looks down on those in sin and judges harshly. We should be looking at our approach in it all. Are we looking to actually help and love one another? Are we pointing it out just to feel better about ourselves and ignoring our own sin? Are we just casting judgment on one another with no real love for someone else?

Now I am not excusing sin in any way. But too often, the church is known for being judgmental rather than loving. We must take the same approach that Jesus did, truly loving everyone but also calling out sin for what it is. We also need to be very careful with how we deal with nonbelievers. They do not know Christ, nor have they been transformed by the renewal of their mind by His Word. How can we expect them to act like Christ in any way? Instead, we want to point them to Jesus and see their hearts changed by the gospel.

How do we go about this in your life?

Do you ever find yourself struggling with this balance?

How can you have a better approach?
