Take Out Toxic

Nehemiah 13:1-9

Nehemiah cracks down in this passage on those who stood against him when he was trying to rebuild. He makes sure there is a consequence to those leaders who would not listen or were trying to openly oppose them. He quite literally throws out their things. He also has the rooms purified! This was a special place, an important place. While reading this, I asked the question, "Who is it we are trying to please?” Eliashib still wanted to please Tobiah, someone who was not deserving of the honor or the place and position given to him, and Nehemiah throws out his things. All of us need to be careful about who we are trying to please. We are here to please and honor God! The one who has done so much for us. There are people around us, and sometimes we find it more important to take care of them or please them even though we know what is right to do. We care more about what people think than what is right. Nehemiah, as a leader, took care of the things and the people who were causing issues. As a leader, he knew that changes needed to be made. He put people into place who are trustworthy! He did not worry about what the others would say. He stood for what was right and put people into place whom he knew to be trustworthy. Nehemiah also calls out sin for what it is. Verse 11 says he “rebuked the officials”. In order to properly deal with the sin, he had to confront it head-on. If there is sin in our lives, we have to confront it! We have to go to God, pray as Nehemiah does time and time again, and say no! He was out with the sin! There was no place for it. God is greater than all our sin! When considering our own lives, do not be afraid to confront the sin in your own life. Nehemiah saw that a change needed to be made, for things to be restored. Sometimes, change, even in our own lives, needs to be made! God is so good, he is there to help us when difficult situations arise! Give it all to him!
