Be Still and Know

Psalm 46

It’s clear to all of us that the world around us is a crazy place! For most, we take a look around and shake our heads. If you are anything like me, you want to start fixing the issues. You begin asking yourself, what can I do to stop this from happening?  However, it's not just the world that is like this; what about in your workplace? Are you the type of person who, when you see a task undone, you jump in and try to take care of it, to the point your mind is about to explode? Here is the BREAKING NEWS headliner for today! BE STILL AND KNOW I AM GOD; we get so caught up with the craziness of life that I think we lose focus on the fact that God is in control.  Psalms 46 tells us

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging
The craziness around us will give way someday, and the one who will remain true is our Heavenly Father.  Psalms 46 goes on and says that Nations will be in uproar, Kingdoms will fall; he lifts his voice and the earth melts! Let's stop there for a minute. Do we truly believe God is all-powerful? I think sometimes in the midst of our troubles, we cast aside that thought. We focus solely on the trouble and not on him.

As I think about the state of be still and know I am God, I instantly go to the story of Peter walking on the water. In Matthew 14, the Disciples see someone walking on water, they instantly thought it was a ghost, but Jesus calls out to them, saying do not be afraid. Peter then replies, saying if you are really Jesus, call me out to the water, which Jesus did. Peter was able to walk on the water when he was focused and trusted Jesus, but as soon as he changed his focus to the trouble around him, he sank.  You and I are never going to walk on water like Peter or Jesus, but we need to realize that our focus must be on God. We need to be still when life is crazy. The world will always have something to throw our way. The world wants us to react, but let's instead be still and trust!
