Numbers 20:6-12
The unknown is a very scary place to be for most people. Is it because they are not in control? Is it that they have little faith? I wish I knew the answer. However, thankfully, as believers, we have the ability to go straight to the Father for counsel. No matter the size of the unknown or issue, we can take it before God, asking for peace and wisdom for His will to be done. Moses is a great example of seeking counsel from God. Throughout the Bible, we see Moses fall to the ground in prayer, seeking what to do. However, we learn from today's scripture reading that even Moses fell before the Lord. He followed through with a faithless reaction. The Bible tells us, starting in verse 10
"He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank."
You see, God remained faithful to his plan, but what you may not have caught is God's direction to Moses. In Verse 8, the Bible tells us God told Moses to take the staff and to speak to the rock. Unfortunately, Moses reacted in that moment and did not respond as he should have. Instead, he spoke to the people and struck the rock twice! He accused the assembly of being rebels towards God; in that moment, he rebelled.
When we look at this example of Moses, I think we can look back on our lives and realize we have done the same thing. When we are seeking God’s perfect will with prayer and fasting, but sometimes we do things our way instead. Let us take heart that God’s will is perfect, and when we are faced with the decision to do it our way. We seek wisdom and respond rather than react.
