“The One Thing” (Joyride Priority)

Warnings are important, and they usually come from those who know and love us the most. The Apostle Paul wanted the Philippians to understand that there were threats to their ongoing influence for Christ. There would be those who arrogantly pointed to a “list of do’s and don’ts” attempting to force the Philippians to comply to what wasn’t Biblical. It is no different in our culture today – it just takes on different shapes and forms. One extreme tells us that in order to be saved or to be obedient Christians, we must follow man-made “sacraments.” The other extreme tells us that “God is love,” so you can live your life any way you want. Ultimately, both extremes miss the mark of Biblical Christianity. Paul wanted the Philippians to embrace the fact that true joy doesn’t come from seeing yourself as an “accomplished” Christian; instead, it comes from a humble heart that gives all of the glory to God. It’s the person who is in love with Jesus so much that everything, and I mean everything, is considered nothing to him when compared to Christ. Paul at one time was a prestigious Pharisee with power, position, prosperity, and popularity. In today’s day, he would have been considered successful, except he wasn’t. If you find yourself “chasing after” these things only to always feel empty, you are not alone. If you have been a church member for years consumed more with a “list than love” or “religion than a relationship,” these words from Paul are for you. Ultimately, the only thing that matters is that we grow in intimacy with Jesus. When that takes place, it grows our gratitude leading to contentment no matter what we face. We call that joy – unhindered and unaffected by circumstances. It’s time that we safeguard our joy before we shipwreck our faith!
