Undeniable Evidence

1 Kings 18:22-40
This is one of my favorite passages in scripture! The story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal is a great example of the power and goodness of God! It is similar to the story in my mind of David and Goliath. When we look at the odds, it seems that everything is against Elijah. There are so many more prophets of Baal than there is of God. It is 450 to 1! Elijah poured water on the altar to make it seem as if it would be even more difficult to light the fire. He does this in a time of famine which would probably make the people around him not very happy as well! It seems as if the odds are completely against Elijah but His faith in God reveals to him the truth. It is everyone else who has the odds stacked against them. Goliath is not the giant in the story of David, and the prophets are the ones who should be afraid when facing Elijah. God is on their side! God was with Elijah! Elijah knew exactly how this story was going to end. He knew that God was going to be there and had full faith and trust in Him. This is a kind of trust of God that I think even in Scripture we hardly see. This is why I love this story. Elijah’s faith is unshakable. He did not hesitate to challenge the other prophets. He did not hesitate when mocking them while they tried to call their god. He has no shame and no worry. To the point that he sees what they are doing as comical! He has no worries as he pours gallons of water on the altar. He knew, from the moment all of this started, that he was going to be victorious because Elijah is not fighting for a personal victory but for the victory of God! God is the giant in these stories, and He is the one fighting for those who follow Him. These kinds of passages are so encouraging to me because it is a good reminder of who our God is. He is a God who has been reliable and powerful for us since the beginning. Even in our own lives He promises to be there for us. He wants us to have this kind of faith in Him, but sometimes our faith is shaken! Have unshakable faith in God! Praise Him for all that He promises to do for us!
