Ecclesiastes 2:4-10
John 15:10-11 says, “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” I feel like ever since I studied and preached on this passage months ago, I keep finding myself reminded of its truth. The writer in Ecclesiastes 2 had achieved greatness. He was at the peak of his rule, power, glory, doing whatever his heart desired and his heart desired a lot. Whatever he wanted he took it. Whoever he wanted to be with had to obey him. He built himself a personal empire greater than anyone had ever seen, and yet it meant nothing. Nothing that he had accomplished brought any lasting satisfaction, any joy, or any peace. It was all meaningless! It meant nothing! He had gained nothing! The pleasures of this world are fleeting! All things mean nothing, and Jesus in John pleads with us to keep his commands. Solomon even acknowledges that his wisdom never left him, that God had never left him! But Solomon had turned his heart towards worldly pleasures. Jesus begs us to keep his commands because he knows this is what brings us true joy. So many times in my life I have to be reminded of this. There are so many things in this world that promise to satisfy us. But time and time again, by Jesus, by Paul, even here by Solomon, we are reminded that all things of this world pass away and all things except Christ are never going to satisfy us. We are created as creatures of worship and made to only worship one thing! We are here to worship Jesus not just to bring Him joy but so that our joy may be complete. You were created on purpose with a purpose! This is to serve Christ in all that you do! We are created to worship Christ in everything we do! Give it all to Jesus!
