Honor Marriage

Hebrews 13:4
“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.”
Hebrews 13:4

Reading this verse, I am immediately drawn to the idea of “all.” Whether you are married, dating, divorced, widowed or single; you should honor marriage. If this was true, if every single person honored marriage, adultery wouldn’t exist. If everyone recognized that marriage is sacred, they wouldn’t be interested in destroying it for their own selfish desires. Sure, temptation would still exist. But the problem in our society, truly since the beginning of time, is that marriage isn’t truly respected or honored the way that God intended; whether it be by those within the marriage or those on the outside.

We are warned that God will judge adulterers and the sexually immoral. God does not take this lightly. Sexual intimacy is clearly defined as honorable and a pure gift from God in the Bible between one man and one woman. Unfortunately, our society disregards this truth. Divorce rates are higher; even within the church! Singles surrender their purity. And adultery is highlighted as a large reason for divorce.

Even if you aren’t married, you can honor marriage. No matter if you’re dating, widowed, divorced or just in a season of singleness; honor your purity! This includes pornography. God designed sexual intimacy to be a beautiful unification within marriage. This Biblical truth is very quickly disregarded as not important in our culture. The greatest thing my husband and I did to prepare for our marriage was to wait to enjoy that gift until after we said our vows! I have talked to many, believe it or not, Christian couples who have let temptation in before they were married and every single one of them regretted it. I don’t say all of this to shame you if that isn’t your story! We have a God who forgives. But that doesn’t mean you continue dishonoring your future marriage. You turn to Him, repent and continue seeking holiness in your life!

I believe that if the Bible clearly states what is honorable to God, we ought to seek to live to honor Him! This is a topic that is uncomfortable and hard to hear for some; but we can’t ignore it. We are not perfect people. At Emmanuel, we don’t condemn anyone who may have dishonored marriage in the past. We want to walk alongside you and fight for Truth!
