Luke 5:8-10
Peter understood who Jesus was and repented! This is where we see the disciple Peter put his faith in Jesus completely and follow Him. This is what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus!
Peter heard the teachings of Jesus and believed in Him so he listened to Jesus’ command to go out and drop his nets. When he saw the result by catching so many fish the nets were under strain of breaking, Peter had to understand that Jesus is God! He also sees his own sin and selfishness, and understands that he is not worthy to be in the presence of Jesus! Jesus is God! How would you respond if Jesus was in your boat? This had to be a terrifying yet surreal experience!
Jesus is revealing Himself to Peter! Peter drops everything and understands that Jesus is now who He has to follow. He is overwhelmed with who God is and who he is as a sinner! Peter says “Go away from me Lord; I am a sinful man!” Peter is not worthy but Jesus loves him and wants Peter to follow anyway! Jesus does not say, “oh no you are ok Peter, you’re not that bad, come on lets go.” He acknowledges that Peter is a sinner and says, “Do not fear.”
Jesus knows who Peter is and what is most important here, is who Jesus is! Jesus is God, the God who cares for sinners, who came to die for sinners, and He comes to Peter because He knows who he is, and Peter drops everything to follow Jesus. Praise the Lord for being a God of repentance!
