John 4:31-38
No one likes being distracted from something they find super important. May it be reading a good book, watching a movie, studying for class, whatever it may be…distractions bring frustration. With spring training just around the corner, the Detroit Tigers are going to be hitting the field with a team that could go a long way and may have a chance to play in the World Series. For today I want us to imagine we are sitting in our houses in October of 2026 with game 7 of the World Series on. The Tigers are one game away from winning it all. I think it's safe to say that we would all be glued to the screen until the game is over. At that moment we are not going to worry about food, the kids( just joking), or anything else at that moment. Any distraction could allow us to miss the game winning hit, home run, or even strike out. Unfortunately, the reality is we have to wait until October to see if the Tigers can pull it off. The distractions we face today were a problem even for the Disciples. You see in John 4:31-38 the disciples were making sure that Jesus had something to eat, which we would all think is not a bad thing. Jesus responded to the disciples by saying “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” At that moment they began to try and figure out how he got food? Did someone bring him food without us knowing? We are able to find Jesus’ response starting in verse 34:
“My food, said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”
Jesus continues on by saying that the harvest they are seeing is not necessarily because of their work, but because of others that went before them. Just as the disciples were distracted with physical food for Jesus, we too need to be reminded that the harvest is ripe still to this day. There are people lost and searching for a relationship with Jesus Christ. We must be willing to reap and sow in the fields God has placed us in. I also want to encourage you with the fact you may be the person to see the harvest, but you may also be the person who is planting seeds. Don’t let the distractions of not seeing the harvest right away discourage you. Push through knowing the fields are plentiful.
