Nehemiah 4:21-23
So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out. At that time I also said to the people, “Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.” Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water. Nehemiah 4:21-23
What a fascinating passage. Nehemiah organized the workers to carry tools in one hand and weapons in the other, alternating between work and defense. With unity and teamwork, half the workers held spears from dawn to night, while everyone, including Nehemiah and his staff, remained steadfast and on constant guard, keeping their clothes on and their weapons prepared and ready. I cannot imagine being so fearful while I work that I would need to have a weapon in one hand while facing opposition and trying to be productive and get my work done at the same time.
The past few weeks, the media coverage of the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk has dominated newsfeeds, networks, and conversations. I really wonder if this will be a “turning point” in our lives. I’ve heard some say, including Kirk’s spouse, that they want to carry on with the work that Charlie was doing. Yes, we should continue to stand firm, stand firm on God’s Word, and allow it to shape every conversation and conviction. We should continue to speak the truth in love. We should continue to share and live out the gospel without compromise. We should continue to be intentional in equipping the next generation. WE should continue the work! We, together, in unity! Teamwork.
Read again the first five words of today’s passage, “So we continued the work”. Let’s be a team and carry the cross of Christ into culture, and let’s continue the work for God’s glory.
