Different Functions...Same Purpose

1 Corinthians 12:12-27

As we continue through the book of Nehemiah and the sermon series Let’s rebuild something. I want us to imagine you are about to build your dream home. Whatever you can imagine your dream house to look like, you have the resources to make it happen. As you prepare to start the project, you realize you do not have the tools or the knowledge to make the right choices when it comes to preparing the land, so you hire a company to clear and prepare the land for you. As the project continues, you realize you now must hire out a carpenter, an electrician, and a plumber, just to name a few. Although they all have unique talents and skills, they all have the same purpose in this project of building you your dream home.  The same can be said about the body of Christ; we all have unique gifts and talents that can be used to build the Kingdom of Heaven. 1 Corinthians 12:15-17 tells us,

“Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.  And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.  If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?”

That we must be able to work together, although we may have different functions as believers, we have the same purpose. You may ask what the purpose is? To make disciples of all nations! We are called to use our talents to further the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I warn you not to compare yourself to others, but rather focus on the main goal. When we are obedient to our role, we see God do amazing things, and YES YOU HAVE A PART TO PLAY! Later in chapter 12, we see Paul end the chapter with this.

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Don’t be sidelined by comparing or fighting those with different functions. As believers, let’s focus on the one thing that matters, the Gospel, and together we will see it spread!
