What Are You Chasing?

1 Timothy 6:6-10

What a wonderful four months this has been JOYRIDING together through Philippians. This beautiful, joy-filled letter written by Paul has taught us some essential and much-needed truths. My takeaway was: finding joy and contentment in Christ, no matter the circumstances.  And here we are, with a final lesson, a final devotion in this series. And this one is certainly beneficial. Check out Paul’s words to Timothy.

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1Timothy 6:6-10

In the verses leading up to today’s scripture passage, Paul had been warning about the false teachers, who had done so much to disrupt the congregation that Timothy was pastoring. These other teachers were driven by a desire for material or financial increase, and they were promoting godliness as a means to gain. Paul boldly shares with Timothy that godliness is not something that gets you a fat wallet; rather, true godliness - as evidenced by one of its fruits: contentment - IS gain. To put it another way, godliness is its own reward, and contentment can be found when our hearts are focused on eternal things.

No doubt you’ve heard the saying, “the love of money is the root of evil." Well, now you know who put that one to ink. The love of money and the pursuit of wealth is a trap! It can quickly become an idol that then breeds other idols, and before you know it, boom, self-destruction. Chasing the almighty dollar will bring trouble and can cause some to lose their footing in their faith. What are you pursuing?

As we’ve come to the end of Philippians, I am going to drop Pastor John’s closing statement right here: “Are you living with a joyful heart – one that joyfully trusts the Lord, one that joyfully sacrifices for the mission, one that joyfully preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ? There’s no greater adventure than passionately following Jesus Christ – it’s the GREATEST JOYRIDE in life!”
