2 Corinthians 10:5
It’s been estimated that on average, we have 40-50 thoughts per minute. That is a lot of thinking. Have you ever really thought about what you’re thinking about? Beginning with Sunday’s message on a positive thought life and continuing through these daily devotions, we should know by now that our thoughts have immense power to shape our feelings, our actions, our reality, and see that our way of thinking can physically alter the state of our brains.
Let’s dive into a phrase, or a common solution that we hear thrown around Christian circles, “take every thought captive”. This isn’t just a phrase, but a truth which the Apostle Paul penned in a letter to the church at Corinth. “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5
This means we are to actively control our thoughts, align them with the word of God, and then take captive any thought that opposes God's truth. Friends, I think we’ve all experienced the fallout of negative thoughts, which then lead to negative actions. We need to firmly stand against any disobedience of what God is telling us to do. This involves recognizing and rejecting thoughts that contradict God's word and instead focusing on virtuous thoughts. On Monday, we camped on Philippians 4:8 thoughts that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and praiseworthy! And just yesterday in Romans, we see the impact of a renewed mind. Yes, our minds can be made new as we change our thoughts and perspectives to align with God's truth.
How do we do this? Start now. Start by stopping ... when you find yourself in a downward spiral, STOP IT. Capture that thought and bring it under control. We have been given a great spiritual weapon to use in this battle to combat negative thoughts. The power of choice. We can choose what we are thinking. Read that again!
Gaining control of our thought life is not a one-time fix but a continual and intentional practice that requires diligence and reliance on God's Word and the Holy Spirit. The way to win this spiritual battle is to take every thought captive. Change your thinking, change your life!
