No Cover-ups Allowed

2 Peter 2:16

Two weeks ago, we celebrated Independence Day. Here in the United States, you can visit just about any town and join in the festivities; watch a fireworks display, enjoy a patriotic parade, feast at a barbecue, or gather with family at the lake. It's a day to commemorate freedom. Freedom is defined as the power or right to speak, act, and change as one wants without hindrance or restraint. It encompasses various aspects, including political independence, personal liberty, and the absence of external controls or coercion. Many movies have been produced that spotlight freedom, and from those movies are some iconic speeches and quotes that speak volumes; Braveheart- "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!" Shawshank Redemption- “I hope”, and Independence Day- "We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!” are a few that come to mind.

Being free and living free are not the same. As Christians, we are called to be free people, but it’s a liberation from the bondage of sin and its consequences through faith in Jesus Christ. It's about being set free to serve God and live a life that is pleasing to Him. This freedom is not a license to do whatever we please, but instead a liberation to live according to God's will and purpose.

In 1 Peter 2, the Apostle Peter is writing to a community of Christians, addressing both Jewish and Gentile believers who are facing persecution and suffering. He encourages them to live Godly lives, and Peter cautions believers in these words,
“Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.” 2 Peter 2:16

Peter’s words are just as relevant to us today. Let us be reminded that our freedom is not an excuse for evil or indulging in sin. Instead, we should live as servants of God, demonstrating our freedom through obedience and love.
